Pipe bursting in Orange: replacement along the old path
Lining fixes most of the sewer lines a camera finds in Orange, but not all of them. A collapsed section, a belly that holds water or a line that was too small from the start needs a new pipe, and bursting delivers one through the old route with only two small pits.

Three conditions that end a lining discussion
The first is collapse: a section where the pipe has caved in, from a root that split a clay joint, a truck on a soft parkway, or cast iron that lost its crown. The camera cannot pass, and neither can a liner. The second is a belly, a length where the pipe dropped and now holds standing water after the camera goes by; a liner would hold the same water. The third is size. A lateral laid for a two-bedroom house in Orange and now serving a five-bedroom remodel, or a shared line built for twenty units and serving forty, is not failing so much as outgrown. All three mean new pipe, and bursting installs it without opening the ground between the house and the street.
The two pits
Bursting needs an entry and an exit. The launch pit normally sits where the lateral leaves the house, at the cleanout or just outside the foundation; the receiving pit sits close to the property line or beside the main. Each is a few feet square, dug by hand or with a small machine, and placed in lawn or planting rather than paving wherever the layout allows. Utilities are marked before the pits are opened, and the camera survey, with the locator's depth readings, shows where the lateral runs relative to the gas, water and irrigation lines so nothing is surprised.
The pull
Rods or a cable are threaded through the old lateral between the two pits. A cone-shaped head goes on at the launch end with the new polyethylene fused behind it, and a hydraulic puller at the receiving end hauls the head through. As it travels it cracks the old pipe open and shoves the pieces sideways into the surrounding earth, and the new pipe slides into the channel it leaves. Nothing between the pits is dug. For a house lateral in Orange the pull occupies an hour or two of a day otherwise spent on pits and connections.
The pipe that goes in
High-density polyethylene is fused on site into one continuous length with no joints, so there is nothing for a root to enter and nothing to corrode, and it flexes with ground movement where clay would crack. It is rated for service lives well beyond the material it replaces. The new line connects to the house drain at one pit and to the main at the other with transition fittings, and those two connections are what the city inspector looks at. pipe bursting for Orange by TSR Trenchless, Inc. describes how bursting jobs are arranged around Orange, and the county coverage page lists the rest of the county.
Soil, slope and the limits of the method
Sand near the coast yields easily to the bursting head; inland clay fights back and the puller has to work harder over the same distance. A straight lateral is the ideal case. A line with several sharp bends will not pass the head and is a lining job, possibly with a short dig at one collapsed point. A line too shallow under a driveway can heave the surface as the head passes, and the survey will flag that in advance. Bursting also cannot be used where there is no room for a pit at either end, which is why the survey settles the method before any digging starts.
Permits and paperwork
Because the receiving pit is often at or near the property line and the new pipe joins the main, the city's public works office is normally involved alongside the plumbing permit. The installer takes care of both filings, books the connection inspection and puts the pit areas back. The owner ends up with the footage that ruled lining out, a pit plan, the pipe specification, the warranty, the permit paperwork and a video of the finished line. The standards behind that documentation are set out at the trenchless methods reference.

Questions we hear about pipe bursting
Why can't a belly be lined?+
A liner is cured against whatever shape the host pipe has. If the host sags, the liner sags, and the low spot keeps collecting water and solids. Bursting replaces the sagging run with new pipe laid at the pull's own grade, which removes the belly instead of copying it.
Can bursting be done through a planned community's common area?+
Yes, with the association's approval. The pits are small and are usually placed in landscaping, and the run between them is not disturbed. The installer gives the HOA the plan, the insurance certificate and the restoration details for the pit areas.
What size can the new pipe be?+
The same as the old line or a size larger. Upsizing is why bursting is chosen for a house that has added bathrooms, a commercial bay that became a restaurant, or a shared line serving more units than it was built for.
Is the pull noisy or disruptive?+
The pulling unit is hydraulic and quieter than an excavator. Most of the day is pits and connections; the pull itself is an hour or two. Neighbors see a truck and two small holes, not a trench.
How do I find out if my line needs bursting?+
Call (949) 267-3595 or send the form. Jetting and a camera pass settle whether lining is possible or new pipe is needed, and the proposal lays out that reasoning. Estimates are free; call now.
